PacketCable Multimedia is the natural evolution of two-way HFC networks because allows operators to add new business into existing DOCSIS plant. The implementation requires a MULTIMEDIA POLICY SERVER in charge of authorizing and reserving resources within DOCSIS networks. Since there are no standard protocol between devices, the Policy Server acts as a mediator between them, such as the case of a CMTS and a SIP Softswitch. Main purpose is to guarantee Quality of Service.
